Project Background

Originally a small getaway cabin with private beach and lake view, the owner needed a complete renovation and addition, to accomodate anticipated year-round occupancy and visiting family members. The owner liked the original architectural style, and wanted to enahnce it during the expansion.  Special consideration also needed to be made for local weather during winter (snow) and summers (mosquitoes), and the owner's activities - - woodworking and lake activities.

Design Approach

Overall square footage was more than doubled, incorporating a full woodworking shop, three-car garage, large master suite with walk-in closets, plus ground-level storage for canoes and kayaks, and a grand exterior screened deck.  Full central vac system was incorporated.

The vertical stone motifs were echoed within the design style of the new addition, and the style of the deck railings was carried through the new deck additions on two levels, including into a large screened-in deck.  The second floor deck provides cover for the entry below, and deck lines follow a consistent chevron shape on both levels.

Results

The result is dramatic, expanded, year-round residence with features consistent with a lakeside lifestyle and the owner's hobbies.  The architectural feel of the original structure was maintained, but enhanced and carried through the new structure.
